How do you maintain a lead-acid forklift battery?

By Uncategorized
Most lead-acid forklift batteries provide around 1,500 - 2,000 charge cycles, which typically means about 5 years of service life. Unfortunately, many batteries do not reach this lifespan due to lack of proper maintenance.   If you establish regular maintenance intervals for all industrial batteries in your warehouse, you can realize the full value of your investment. Proper battery care and watering can help extend the life of your industrial battery.   Forklift battery maintenance is a relatively easy task and can be broken down into several easy tasks. Keep the battery clean, dry and free from corrosion Check water weekly for correct water level (about ½” below the battery cap opening) Add clean, non-ionized water when needed (only after the charge cycle, not before) Inspect your battery a part of your forklift checklist. Look for defects or malfunctions Wash and service semi-annually to control acid and corrosion   That’s it. The challenge is making sure it gets done. Set up a weekly schedule designating a specific person to be in charge of checking for proper water levels and a quick clean of the top to take care of any build up. If your forklift battery is down, chances are...

What are the OSHA guidelines for Forklift batteries and charging?

By Uncategorized
It is important to follow OSHA regulations when working with forklift batteries. For example, what is the maximum number of feet an eye wash station can be from battery handling area?  A facility for quick drenching of the eyes and body should be provided within 25 feet of battery handling areas. It is important to put safety first when working with hazardous materials like acid. What are the other rules about forklift batteries and charging procedures? If you have any questions after reading this, be sure to check the OSHA regulation 1926.441(a)   Where is the best place to store industrial batteries? Locate Lead-acid batteries in a well-ventilated area that also prevents fumes, gases or electrolyte spray from going into other areas.   What happens without proper ventilation? Ventilation is necessary to ensure diffusion of battery gases and prevent accumulation of an explosive mixture.   What personal protection equipment is required? Batteries contain sulfuric acid, a chemical that can cause severe burns. Minimal protective gear is face shield, apron, and rubber gloves. Also remove all metallic jewelry when handling and charging industrial batteries.   Do I need a separate charging location for lead-acid batteries? Yes. Charging should be done in...

How to select a forklift battery?

By Uncategorized
The battery is a large investment for your electric forklift. Choosing the right battery for your forklift will help get a longer life from your battery and keep your forklift working during every shift.   A forklift battery actually has two functions. The first, and obvious one is to provide a power source to the forklift. The second is to provide mass as a counterweight, which aids the forklift’s lifting capacity. Installing an undersized battery can cause stability issues with the forklift. Consult the forklift’s data tag for the counterweight requirement. Next, measure the maximum space available in the battery compartment.   Learning the voltage level the forklift is designed to handle is also important to productivity. Battery capacity is rated in amp hours. The higher the amp hour, the more power the battery will deliver. To maximize the production and run time of your forklift, purchase the highest rated amp hour capacity battery that will fit into the battery compartment.   After identifying a battery, consult with your battery supplier to determine the number of batteries you’ll need to purchase for your forklift. If you run a multi-shift operation, it may be necessary to have 2-3 batteries dedicated to...
